Over the past few years, there has been a great amount of conversation in the world of fashion around the manufacture of environmentally – conscious clothing. From the materials used, all the way to the production process, consumers are demanding a way forward that will be kinder to the environment . And with that being said, much pressure has been placed more especially on fast fashion retailers such as H&M to do better.

H&M has continued to show its commitment to a more sustainable fashion future through its Conscious Collection. The latest AW20 Conscious Collection officially dropped yesterday, Thursday the 5th of March in all South African stores. One thing I particularly enjoy about this collection is that it makes sustainable fashion available to consumers at varying price points, which hasn’t been the norm in the world of fashion.

The dress I’m wearing below for example retails at R329.00 which is the perfect price point for us all to enjoy! I must also add just how much I love how versatile this dress is. It’s a dress I can wear with stockings to the office, and definitely a dress I can rock at one of the events I attend.

I’m the ultimate accessories girl, and so I paired this dress with a black sued fedora. I also played on texture and this seasons hottest trend – the snake print. These off white snake print boots with a brown heel were the perfect pair to compliment this dress, without stealing the show.

Rocking one of my favorite pieces from the H&M Conscious Collection

H&M’s Conscious Collection is all about the timeless classics and wardrobe staples you never get tired of. Long-lasting design in more sustainable materials and the autumn must-haves you need to update your wardrobe. –  Maria Östblom, Head of Design Womenswear at H&M.

The Conscious collection has pieces made from recycled materials or materials that have less impact on the environment. The main material for H&M’s Conscious Collection is recycled polyester. It can be found on the shirts, dresses, knitwear, outerwear and tailored pieces.  Most often made from used PET bottles, recycled polyester is processed and spun to create a fabric that’s easy to care for. Meanwhile, the jersey pieces in the collection are made from organic cotton or blend made out of TENCEL™ lyocell fibres.

If laid back and sophisticated is your thing, there’s definitely something for you!  The Conscious Collection features figure-flattering dresses and tailored separates. It also features cosy oversized hoodies that can double as dresses and a checked shirt that can be thrown over any outfit – perfect for this season autumn/winter which seems to have creeped up on us sooner than expected.

We want to use our size to lead the change towards circular and renewable fashion. The H&M
Conscious Collection is an amazing example of how far we have come with technology and innovations replacing conventional materials with recycled alternatives. – Pascal Brun, Global Sustainability Manager at H&M.

This week, I also came across quite an interesting IGTV I thought I should share as food for thought. Posted by Vanessa Hong of The Haute Pursuit, this video expresses her connection, or now lack thereof to the world of fashion. She further goes on to express just how emotionally and physically taxing fashion weeks can be, and just how she’s trying to keep it real with herself.

As more celebrities, top models and influencers speak out, I hope we get to see a greater shift in the way things are done in fashion. I hope more designers and fast fashion retailers begin to play their part in creating environmentally – conscious clothing.

Take a look at this video, and don’t forget to let me know your thoughts in the comments section.
